First edition. Atlas volume. Being volume four of a four volume set. With twenty plates; nineteen illustrating birth abnormalities in humans and animals and one with a table titled 'Hermaphrodismes&apos. Collated complete Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (December 16, 1805 – November 10, 1861) was a French zoologist and an authority on deviation from normal structure. He coined the term ethology. He was born in Paris, the son of Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. In his earlier years he showed an aptitude for mathematics, but eventually he devoted himself to the study of natural history and of medicine, and in 1824 he was appointed assistant naturalist to his father. In 1832-1837 he published his great teratological work in three volumes, accompanied by this volume containing an explanation of the plates, twenty pages of medical illustrations and a table of contents referring to all four volumes. With previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown of one G. N. J. Sommer, MD. of Trenton, New Jersey. Expertly rebound in a half cloth binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with very slight shelfwear and bumping to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Loss to rear pastedown, though this can be easily repaired. Some details of one plate have been neatly hand coloured. Slight age-toning to many pages, though most plates remain bright. Slight marginal tidemarks to last few pages. Collated, complete.This volume contains the table of contents, plates and their explanations to accompany the influential work of teratology. From French zoologist and specialist on deviation from normal structure, Isidore Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire. This copy was presented to the Pathological Institute in Glasgow by Professor Joseph Coats in 1899. Coats wrote the first book on practical pathology that ultimately became the most authoritative piece of text of the profession.  In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound with edgewear and rubbing to the spine head and tail. With wear and loss to the spine labels. Marks and darkening to the leather. Presentation bookplate to the front pastedown.
